THE STAGE CONSTANTS OF CASCADE IMPACTORS. Technical Progress Report
The particle size distributions which would be found on each stage of a csscade impactor when used to sample and aerosol having a lognormal mass distribution were calculated. Three impactors, differing with respect to the collection characteristics of the various stages, were assumed. Samples were obtained from hypothetical aerosols having a wide randge of distribution parameters. It is shown that for a particular aerosol the particle sizes appear to be lognormally distributed on all stages and that the mass mediand diameter for a given stage, calculated from the number distribution on that stsge, is a good estimate of the true mass median diameter for that stage. The true mass median diameters and true effective cut-off diameters for each stage and for each aerosol were calculated also. The latter are shown to be superior for interpreting impactor data.
