NEW METHODS OF SPECTROSCOPY APPLIED TO THE NUCLEAR 1-p SHELL (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4127888
The intermediate coupling shell model for nuclei is cousidered in terms of the classification of states, introduced by Elliott, according to the irreducible representations of the unitary unimodular group in three dimensions, SU/sub 3/. The properties of this group are used to produce the approximate spectrum of a long-range two-body central potential, without exchange, acting within an oscillator shell. When specialized to the l-p shell, a more general central interaction, including exchange forces, is shown to be approximately diagonal in the chosen representation, and its approximate spectrum is computed. A method is demonstrated for calculating the matrix elements of a single-particle spinorbit force in the representation, using the generating functions of the group, SU/sub 3/. The intermediate coupling energy spectra of the nuclei of the l-p shsll are then calculated to first or secord order in perturbation theory. The relation of the perturbation wave functions to the functions considered by Kurath and Picman in their treatment of the 1-p shell is discussed. (auth)
