A HISTOLOGIC STUDY OF THE FOREIGN SPLEEN REACTION IN SUBLETHALLY IRRADIATIED F1 HYBRID MICE

Journal Article · · American Journal of Pathology (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4127834
Tissues of sublethally irradiated hybrid mice injected with parental strain spleen cells after 500 r whole-body x irradiation underwent a spectrum of changes varying in severity and depending on the strain combination. Mortality was similarly strain-dependent. The lesions were most striking in lymphoid structures, such as the lymph nodes, splenic white pulp, and Peyer's patches of the intestine. They consisted of marked hyperplasia of stromal reticular cells, with obliteration of the normal architecture and apparent interference with regeneration or repopulation following irradiation. This lesion often progressed to necrosis, ending in scarring and fibrosis, although in late survivors normal architecture tended to be restored. The thymic lymphoid tissues did not take part in the hyperplastic reaction. Before peak intensity of these granulomatous changes, there was regeneration of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, thymus and splenic red pulp. After 2 to 3 weeks, however, secondary atrophy frequently occurred at these sites, followed again in about 1 week by regeneration in survivors. The peri-portal areas of the liver often showed leakocytic infiltration at the height of the reaction. No constant change was noted in most other tissues. (auth)
