A neutron detector using crystalline rhombohedral boron phosphides having a boron-to-phosphorus ratio of at least 6 to 1 as the sensing element is described. The preparation of boron phosphides is discussed and 9 examples are given. The boron phosphide gives a varying resistance in accordance with the radiation flux to which it is subjected. High-melting-point conductors are attached to the boron phosphides and make ohmic contact. Electric leads are attached to the conductors and associated circuitry. (M.C.G.)
