The effectiveness of radiation processing in extending the storage life of fruits and vegetables was investigated. Preliminary results are reported on the effects of various treatments combined with gamma irradiation at various dose levels on the flavor, texture, chemical composition, water loss, and general post-irradiation storage properties of lemons, oranges, strawberries, pears, asparagus, tomatoes, papayas, pineapples, peaches, nectarines, and grapes. The effects of internal atmospheres and ozone on radiation injury of fruits and the radiosensitivity of fungi involved in fruit spoilage were also investigated. (C.H.)
