COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CREEP IN IMPERFECT SINGLE CRYSTALS AND POLYCRYSTALS OF $alpha$-URANIUM (in French)

Journal Article · · Mem. Sci. Rev. Met.
OSTI ID:4126547
A study of the variation of activation energy during creep with temperature on uranium polycrystals and imperfect single crystals, showed that with polycrystals the energy remains constant above 550 deg C with a value of 42 plus or minus 2 kcal/ mole, near the value found for self-diffusion. The observation of a polygonization occurring during creep suggests that the rate process of deformation is controlled by climb of dislocations. For imperfect single-crystals, the activation energy value is higher than the value found for polycrystals. An explanation is proposed in relation with the pre-existing polygonization due to the BETA yields alpha transformation. (auth)
