MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF TERBIUM-YTTRIUM, DYSPROSIUM-YTTRIUM, AND HOLMIUM- YTTRIUM SOLID SOLUTIONS

OSTI ID:4126258
The magnetic properties of the binary solid solutions of the systems Tb in Y, Dy in Y, and Ho in Y were investigated to determine the changes in these properties resulting from the differing atomic enviromment. Samples were prepared by levitation melting and were shown by x-ray diffraction to be single phase, hexagonal close packed, in the A3 type structure. Each system appeared to form continuous solid solutions over the entire concentration range. Thermomagnetic analyses were carried out between liquid He and room temperatures, and field dependencies were performed at liquid He, liquid N/sub 2/, and room temperature. Measurements were performed upon the pure lanthanons and upon alloys containing from 10 to 90 at.% Tb, 10 to 95 at. % Dy, and 10 to 80 at.% Ho. Results are reported and explained qualitatively in terms of the antiferromagnetic spiral structure, which is known to exist in the 3 pure lanthanons. (M.P.G.)
