>Mossbaure absorption spectra at 78 deg K were obtained for a series of compounds of the form R : Fe(CO)/sub 4/, where R includes triphenylphosphine, triethylphosphitc, acenaphthalene, trans-cinnamaldehyde, maleic anhydride, syn- syn-1,3-dimethyl- pi -allyl cation, syn-1 -methyl - pi -allyl cation, pi -allyl cation and I/sub 2/. The isomer shift increases and the electiic quadrupole splitting decreases regularly through this series. The effect is explained in terms of the extent of forward coordination of the ligands, and so forms a basis measuring Lewis basicity of ligands. The compound I/sub 2/ : Fe(CO)/sub 4/ unexpectedly follows the trend, suggesting that appreciable bonding remains between iodine atoms. (auth)
