SYNERGISTIC EFFECT IN THE SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF THORIUM

Journal Article · · J. Chinese Chem. Soc. (Taiwan) (2)
By using Th/sup 234/ as tracer, the synergistic effects in the extraction of thorium from aqueous solutions with mixtures of organic solvents were investigated for the system Th/sup 4+// BETA -diketones/TBP/diluents. Four BETA -diketones (acetylacetone, benzoylacetone, dibenzoylmethane, and trifluoroacetone) were used. Synergistic enhancements on the distribution ratios were observed in all cases except when acetylacetone was used as the chelating agent at the pH range of 2-3. Based on the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the synergistic effect is suggested. The effect of diluent is also discussed. (auth)
