S>The most accurate method for measuring neutron flux, the activation method, depends on determinations of decay rates. Formulas are presented for determination of the absolute rate of decay of radionuclides from beta-gamma coincidence measurements, with corrections for such factors as dead time, background, and simplifying assumptions. Curves for coincidence versus resolution time were plotted, from which the real coincidence time was determined, and the results were compared with those obtained from the formulas. Since errors resulting from the use of the curves in place of the formulas may thus be estimated, the use of the formulas becomes unnecessary. In an experimental study of the variables, the values for the decay rate of a Au/sup 198/ source determined from the curves differed from those determined from the formulas by less than 0.8%. For the experiments a 4 pi pillbox'' counter, with a tungsten anode of 0.05 mm diameter and methane gas, was used. The dead time was 5 mu sec. (TTT)
