S>A reactor moderator is designed comprising a plurality of columns of graphite blocks separated by graphite spacing tiles arranged so that the minimum Wigner-growth properties of the blocks are in the lengthwise direction and those of the tiles are in a direction normal to that of the columns. The faces of the blocks and tiles have interlocking key devices which are skewed so that axially adjacent blocks are angularly twisted relative to each other, thereby reducing neutron streaming and coolant leakage.
