VARIATION WITH TEMPERATURE OF YOUNG'S MODULUS OF POLYCRYSTALLINE GRAPHITE

Measurements of Young's modulus of polycrystalline artificial graphite from 20 to 1OO0 deg C indicated that the variation with temperature is not always positive. There was a well-defined minimum in the region of 200 deg C. The tem perature at which the minima occurred was not constant but appeared to lie between 100 and 300 deg C, depending on the nature of the material. The occurrence of the minimum and the subsequent rise of the modulus may be attributed to some structural change that becomes important at about 200 deg C. Several theories are advanced to account for this variation. (M. C. G.)
