A FUSED QUARTZ MICROBALANCE STUDY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4122964

A detailed study was conducted of a quartz microbalance which is used in ultra-high vacuum applications to make weight measurements of evaporated metal films to determine their gas sorption characteristics. It is basically a beam- type microbalance and is built entirely of fused quartz. The unique features of this balance are its application to high vacuum and its electrical readout capability. Magnetic damping allows the weighing to be performed rapidly. Ruggedness, ease of operation, accuracy, and sensitivity make the balance reliable. It can be operated easily within a five-inch diameter bell jar. (auth)
