THE GAMMA RAY SPECTRA OF $sup 65$Ni AND $sup 65$Zn. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOWER EXCITED STATES OF $sup 65$Cu

The gamma spectra of Ni/sup 65/ and of Zn/sup 65/ were studied by means of scintillation techniques. It is shown that the first excited state of Cubs at 770 kev is not populated in either of the decays. In Ni/sup 65/ (half- life: (2.50 plus or minus 0.03) h) two new gamma rays of (1.63 plus or minus 0.05) and (1.73 plus or minus 0.05) Mev were found, which originate at levels of the same energy known to exist in Cu/sup 65/. Evidence is presented that the level at 1.482 Mev does not belong to the quartet of levels arising from the coupling of the 29th proton (p/sub 3/2/) to the Ni/sup 64/ core in its first excited 2/sup +/ state (at 1.34 Mev), as assumed by Lawson and Uretsky in their application of the center-of-gravity theorem to Cu/sup 65/. Agreement with this theorem was obtained for certain spin assignments to the other four excited states in Cu/sup 65/ below 2 Mev. (auth)
