THE FEASIBILITY OF THE FAST NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS TO THE COPPER CONTENT DETERMINATION IN COPPER ORES

From a comparison of the nuclear properties of Cu, it is shown that fast neutron activation results in a gamma activity which is 7 times as great as that from thermal neutron activation and which is due to positron annihilation and therefore can be registered on a coincidence spectrometer. Since the threshold energy of the Cu/sup 63/(n,2n) reaction is 12 Mev, a D-T neutron source must be used. The interferences in Low Silesia ore are examined. In an estimate of the sensitivity of the proposed method, the activation of 5 g ore containing 2% Cu in a flux of 10/sup 7/ fast n/cm/sup 2//sec for 2 min was found to give approximates 3 x 10/sup 3/ coincidences/min. The activity due to oxygen can be eliminated by delaying measurement by 1 min after activation, and the time needed for the determination is estimated to be 5 min. (D.L.C.)
