ACTIVATION CROSS-SECTIONS FOR REACTIONS OF CHLORINE AND COPPER WITH 14.8 MeV NEUTRONS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
Absolute neutron activation cross-sections at 14.8 Mev were measured for chlorine and for ihe Cu/sup 65/(n, p) reaction, based on comparison with Cu/sup 63/(n, 2n)Cu/sup 62/ reaction (556 mb) which was used as a standard monitor for the neutron flux. The observed reactions. half-lives. and cross-sections are: Cl/ sup 37/(n,p)S.sup 37/, 5.0 min. 25.4 plus or minus 2.1 mb; Cl/sup 37/(n, alpha )P/sup 34, 12.5 sec, 43.8 plus or minus 6.9 mb; Cl/sup 35(n, alpha )P/sup 14.5 d. 122 = 56 mb: Cl/sup 35/(n,2n)Cl/sup 34m/(upper state). 32.4 min. 5.6 plus or minus 2/0 mb; Cl/sup 35(n,2n)Cl/sup 34g/(ground-state), 1.5 sec. 2.8 plus or minus 0.5 mb: and. from the copper monitor. he chlorine cross-sections with values esiimated according to the compound nucleus theory as outlined by Blatt and Weisskopf show the usual deviations. These deviations are attributed io inadequacies in the simple version of the compound nucleus theory. (auth)
