HBWR QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT, JULY TO SEPTEMBER 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4121534
The reactor was shut down for the installation of the equipment for the water chemistry experiments and general maintenance. During operation a series of dynamics experiments was carried out, consisting of the following experiments: automatic control of the vessel pressure, reactivity oscillator experiments, nonlinear reactivity perturbation, preliminary steam load variation experiment, dynamics measurements with digital perturbations, norse measurements, and study of the influence of the introduced reactivity perturbations on reactor stability. Considerable effort was made to detect leakages. Fission product contamination was measured and evaluated. Other activities included: installing a special void element and removing the modified first charge spike element, reevaluation of temperature reactivity effects in the first fuel charge, analysis of differential void reactivity in NORA and HBWR, analysis of control rod experiments, application of GIER computer to dynamic experiments, fabrication and development of fourth instrumented fuel assembly (IFA-4), in-core instrument development, measurement of central oxide temperature in IFA-3, and evaluation of proposed water chemistry program.
