Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used as subjects in an investigation of the extent to which x-irradiation would produce saccharin avoidance behavior in the absence of pairing of stimuli. The subjects were given four daily exposures of 10.4 r of x-irradiation, followed by 41.6 r of whole-body air exposure dose at a rate of 10.4 r/minute on the fifth day. The trace conditioning paradigm was employed with a CS period of 25 minutes, during which period groups were given a 0.1% saccharin solution, water, or nothing to drink. The CS was presented only prior to the 41.6 r exposure. All groups given the 41.6 r exposure were significantly different from each other in avoidance behavior and from the pooled sham-irradiated controls. The group given saccharin to drink and the group given nothing to drink prior to irradiation showed the greatest degree of avoidance behavior. It was concluded that the avoidance behavior of the group gtven no fluid to drink and the group given water to drink prior to irradiation could not be considered as a conditioned response due entirely to the effects of association of stimuli. The results are believed to be, at least in part, the direct result of the biological effects of radiation or related to the latency and duration of these effects which were associated with the discriminatory solution in the home cage.
