EFFECTS OF PLASMA ON THE ABSORPTION ON ZINC BY MAMMALIAN ERYTHROCYTES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4121093

The effect of plasma on uptake of Zn/sup 65/ by rat red cells was determined by in vitro investigation. It was found that the amount of Zn which the cells would absorb per unit time was inversely proportional to the amount of plasma present in the external medium, indicating inhibition of Zn/sup 65/ uptake by red cells in the presence of plasma. Conversely it was found that previously labeled red cells showed a greater loss of Zn/sup 65/ to a plasma medium than to a saline medium, indicating that the loss of Zn/sup 65/ from red cells is facilitated by the presence of plasma.
