ENERGY SPECTRUM OF THE PHOTONEUTRONS FROM GOLD
The energy spectrum of the neutrons produced at 90 deg to a gold target bombarded with 55 Mev bremsstrahlung was measured. Nuclear emulsions were used to detect the photoneutrons. The spectrum shows two peaks. The large peak at l.25 Mev can be interpreted as due to the statistical decay of the compound nucleus. The smaller peak at about 5.5 Mev is assumed to come from a "direct" transition, as described by the Wilkinson model. A new method is presented for the calculation of the corrections involved for those proton recoils which leave the emulsion. (auth)
