The oral introduction of tetracycline antibiotics to albino rats, the daily dose being 300 mg/kg, during 15-18 days previous to x irradiation afforded the evidence of a higher percentage of survival and life expectation of animals in the course of radiation sickness. Such increase of resistance of animals is recorded even when the animals are exposed 3 or 5 days after the introduction of antibiotics was completed. Bacteriologic investigations did not reveal any quantitative difference in the microflora of rats, irrespective of the fact whether or not antibiotics had been administered to rats previous to irradiation. On the basis of the data presented it was presumed that preliminary introduction of tetracycline antibiotics enhances protective mechanisms of the organism in radiation sickness regardless of the antibacterial properties of antibiotics.
