DOSE TO THE POPULATION OF GREAT BRITAIN FROM THE MEDICAL USE OF IONIZING RADIATION: ITS MEASUREMENT AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Journal Article · · Radiography (England)
OSTI ID:4120439
The compilation and evaluation of the report of the Adrian Committee (Radiological Hazards to Patients, London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1960) are discussed. The report concluded that the measured dose levels did not show a need for major restrictions in radiologic practice and that the number and type of examinations or treatments must be dictated by the clinical needs of the patient. Among the evident implications of the report is the finding that on the basis of the range of doses measured for any one examination, the mean gonad dose is greatly affected by the proportion of high doses occurring in the sample measurements. The major part of the dose reduction, suggested as practicable by the Adrian Committee, could be achieved simply by better collimation and better direction of the x-ray beam. (BBB)
