Methods of calculation of genetically significant radiation are discussed, and the various estimates of the dose from diagnostic radiology are compared. The main problem in any assessment is the determination of the average gonad dose for each sex and for each type of examination; methods of measurement are discussed and illustrations are given of the variability of the results obtained. An outline is given of the British Adrian Committee survey, now nearing completion, and a description of the methods and equipment used. This survey underlines the need for making measurements in a wide selection of hospitals, and indicates the ways in which the available man-power can be used to best advantage. Some general conclusions are drawn about the genetic hazard associated with diagnostic radiology. (auth)
