IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4119996
A supporting arrangement for reactor pressure vessels is designed so that the vessel is suspended from rigid support means by a plurality of suspension members pivotally attached at both ends to the vessel. The vessel is shaped so that the coolant pressure opposes the bending stresses induced in the vessel at the points of suspension, and arrangements are made to suspend the reactor core within the vessel from the same support means. The advantages of this arrangement are that there is no tendency of the support members to buckle, the vessel has greater freedom to expand or contract with temperature or pressure changes, and stresses in the vessel are greatly reduced. This arrangement is suitable for use with gas-cooled reactors having core support structures such as those described by Patent Serial No. 852,839. Drawings are included. (D.L.C.)
