CORE SUPPORTING ARRANGEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4003558
A supporting arrangement for the pressure vessel of a heterogeneous reactor, is described with reference to a gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactor. In the arrangement, the pressure vessel is suspended from rigid support means by a plurality of suspension members attached to the pressure vessel at points distributed around the vessel. The suspension members are pivothlly attached at both ends to the vessel and support means. The core within the pressure vessel may be suspended in a similar way to oppose the bending stresses at the points of attachment of the suspension members, or it may be simply supported by a skirt. The advantages of this supporting arrangement over one in which the pressure vessel is supported from beneath by a skirt or inverted A frames are that there is no compression and hence no tendency to buckle, the vessel has more freedom to expand or contract, and stresses are lower.
