METHODS OF PRODUCING IODINE-131

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4119793

A method of producing I/sup 131/ by neutron irradiation of tellurous anhydride is patented. The irradiated anhydride is dissolved in sodium hydroxide to form an alkaline tellurite solution. The solution is concentrated, and the tellurite is changed into tellumate by oxidizing the solution with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an oxidation catalyst, such as an alkali metal molybdate or an alkali metal vanadate. The solution is then acidified and distilled to recover the iodine. The method may be performed in the presence of an inert gas, such as N. (M.P.G.)
