HEAVY WATER MODERATED POWER REACTORS. Progress Report for July 1960
S>Fifty-six "driver" fuel tubes for the Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) were coextruded and are being evaluated. The first irradiation test of Zircaloyclad swaged tubes of uranium oxide was started at Savannah River. The irradiation specimens are 2 it long x 2.30 in. OD x 1.46 in. ID. Two failures occurred among 15 swaged oxide tabes with stainless-steel sheaths that were irradiated at Savannah River. Three tandem-extruded joints of stainless steel and Zircaloy are being irradiated at a temperature below 100/sup o/C and an axial tensile stress of 13,000 psi. Experimental data were obtained at 650 and 800 psig on the head loss for forced flow of boiling water. (For preceding period see DP-515.) (auth)
