A pinch device for producing stable, dense plasma discharges for thermonuclear reactions is designed in which an auxiliary magnetic field in opposition to the induced magnetic field is used to reduce disrupting kink perturbations of the pinch column and to control its compression. The device produces pulsed linear discharges of a hollow cylinder geometry and of the same frequency as that of the auxiliary field. (D.L.C.)
