GRAFT COPOLYMERS AND PREPARATION THEREOF
Graft copolymers having desirable properties may be prepared by mixing a poly(alkylacrylate) (the polymer reactant) with a monomer and exposing to high- energy radiation to a total dose of 5 x 10/sup 5/ to 2 x 10/sup 6/ rep. The polymer reactant must be one in which the alkyl portion contains no more than 8 carbon atoms and does not have a tertiary carbon atom attached directly to the adjacent oxygen atom, and it should have an average molecular weight of 10/sup 4/ to 10/sup 6/. Examples of monomers that may be used in the above manner are methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, styrene, etc. The proportion of the polymer and monomer should be 35 to 65 wt. % of either one, and the reaction preferably should be carried out in the anaerobic condition and at a temperature between 0 and 70 deg C.
