IMPROVED METHOD FOR RADIATION GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF N-VINYL LACTAM MONOMERS ON ACRYLONITRILE POLYMER SUBSTRATES
A method is described for improving the dye-receptivity of acrylonitrile polymers by radioinduced graft copolymer ization in contact with a N-vinyl lactam monomer. prefer ably N-vinyl pyrrolidonc. The method consists of prepar the acrylonitrile polymer in aquagel form, impregnating with a minor proportion (< 20%) of N-vinyl pyrrolidone in with a minor proportion (<20%) oi N-vinyi pyrrolidone an the form of an aqueous solution, and exposing the impregnated aquagel to high-energy radiation at doses of 10/sup 4/ to 2 x 10/sup 5/ rep at 20 to 60 C. ln order to reduce radioinduced production of O/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/O/ sub 2/ in H/sub 2/O, the aqueous solution of the monomer should be kept at a pH of 7 to 10. A wetti agent, Na/sub 3/PO/sub 4/, is usually added. Experiments were performed which show the effects of dose, monomer concentration. and temperature on dye-receptivity of graft copolymers prepared in the above manner. Another experiment shows the effects on dye-receptivity of various additives (NaHSO/sub 3/. Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, Na/sub 2/S. NaNO/sub 3/, Na/sub 3/P0/sub 4/, NaCI, ZnSO/sub 4/, Na/sub 2/SO/sub 3/, and SnCl/sub 4/), of which NaHSO/sub 3/ and Na/sub 2/S were found to prevent dye-receptivity. Solvents other than H/sub 2/O which may be used to prepare monomer solutions for impregnating the acrylonitrile polymer aquagel and dyestuffs which may be used to dye the graft copolymers are given. .
