NATURAL OCCURRENCE OF SAMARIUM-146
An 89-mg sample (approximately 45 mu g/cm/sup 2/) of samarium oxide enriched in Sm/sup 146/ was counted for a period of 64 hr. The alpha -particle spectrum obtained is shown. Only the Sm/sup 147/ peak was prominent; there was no significant indication of the presence of second peak in the vicinity of 2.5 Mev. Using the value of the half life of 5 x 10/sup 7/ years obtained by Seaborg and Dunlavey, an upper limit of 2 x 10/sup -7/ per cent for the isotopic abundance of Sm/sup 146/ in natural samarium was calculated.
