The criteria for the U.S. Department of Energy`s standards program define a standard as an expressed expectation for the performance of work. The criteria document also describes a process to determine the necessary- and-sufficient set of standards to provide for adequate protection of the environment, workers, and the public. Demonstrations are being performed to introduce the process, demonstrate the value of the process, and identify improvements.
