A study was undertaken on the catalytic dehydration of pure n-decyl and n-duodecyl alcohols and the isomerization of the products by irradiated Al/sub 2/ O/sub 3/ and its phosphated compound. The catalysts which had a grain size ranging from 1 to 2 mm, were exposed to slow neutrons and gamma rays in he reactor at a flux of about 0.8 x 10/sup 13/ n/cm/sup 2/ sec; this caused the formation of radioactive isotopes of the main components and the impurities, including Fe/sup 59/, Na/sup 24/, and Cu/sup 64/; the Al and O yielded only the short-lived Al/sup 28/ and O/sup 19/; the phosphate sample contained also P/sup 32/. The dehydration studies indicated that the catalytic activity of the unirradiated and irradiated Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ differed only slightly; the isomerization of the olefinic reaction products was enhanced by the irradiated material. The specific surface of the oxide was not changed by the irradiation. Irradiation of the phosphated material for 2 days resulted in the reduction of its catalytic activity but exposure for 1 month caused an increase. It was surmised that the BETA activity of P/sup 32/ overcame the negative effect of the neutron bombardment. It is considered possible that under the effect of the irradiation the number of active centers in the catalyst decreases, resulting in a smoothing out of the surface. (TTT)
