A STUDY OF THE $gamma$-SPECTRUM OF Au$sup 197+$, AND OF THE $beta$$sup +$- SPECTRUM OF O$sup 1$$sup 5$ (in Russian)

The BETA spectrum of a short-lived isotope with a half life of less than a few minutes can be investigated by introducing a beam of charged particles from a cyclotion into a magnetic-lens BETA spectrometer having a talent at one of its focal points. The gamma radiation can also be investigated from the conversion electron lines. The Au/sup 197*/ isomer was prepared by the inelastic scattering of 13.7-Mev deuterons on Au/sup 197/. The conversion electron spectrum showed three peaks at energies of 117, 197, and 265 kev with a small peak at 153 kev. The 131-kev gamma quantum corresponded to the 117-kev conversion electron (conversion at the L-shell), and the 278-kev gamma quantum corresponded to the 197- and 265-kev conversion electrons (conversions at the K- and L-shells). The half life of Au/sup 197*/ was found to be 9 plus or minus 2 seconds. The BETA /sup +/ spectrum of O/sup 15/ was obtained by irradiating C/ sup 12/ with alpha particles. The Fermi plot of the BETA /sup +/ spectrum i s a straight line with an upper limit of 1700 plus or minus 20 kev. The half life of O/sup 15/ was found to be 1.9 plus or minus 0.2 minutes. (TTT)
