AN INVESTIGATION OF A NEW NICKEL ALLOY STRENGTHENED BY DISPERSED THORIA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4115309
An experimental investigation was made to evaluate sheet material composed of a new nickel alloy strengthened by dispersed thoria, for aerospace applications in the temperature range from 1,800 to 2,400 deg F. Mechanical- property tests were made at room and at elevated temperatures from 1,700 to 2,570 deg F. The effect of preoxidation at various temperatures on the room-temperature tensile properties is also shown. One diffusion coating was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in reducing oxidation. Fabrication studies included machining, diffusion-bond joining, and several different welding processes. A description of the equipment and procedures utilized in performing the evaluation tests is also included. The metallurgical study included x-ray analysis and a microstructural examination of uncoated and coated sheet material. (auth)
