A device to restrain the radial movement of graphitemoderator blocks during operation of a reactor is patented. A series of wedges is placed in the moderator structure. The wedges can be displaced in a direction normal to the radial direction to permit expansion of the moderator structure rtn the radial direction. The displacement of the wedges is controlled by a spring-loaded thrust rod extending outside the reactor shielding, so that the spring is protected from radiation. Details of the thirst-rod design are described. (M.P.G.)
