MODIFICATION OF GENETIC DAMAGE PRODUCED BY IONIZING RADIATION. Progress Report

Progress is reported in studies on the genetic effects of radiation in Drosophila melanogaster. An attempt was made to define the spectrum of effects that radiation, characterized by different linear energy transfer properties, produces in the genetic material of the fruit fly. Data are presented on the effects of x, gamma , and fast neutrons on various developmental stages, the effects of various external environmental conditions, and the effects of irradiation of feature spermatozoa in the male and in the female. Cytological observations are described. (C.H.)
