The main coolant circulators for the OECD High Temperature Reactor Dragon at Winfrith in England are totally enclosed blowers with hydrodynamic gas-lubricated bearings. The development and production of these bearings involved the solution of a number of problems. Having regards to the fact that the Dragon reactor is to be used for experimental work, a very wide working range was specified for the circulators. Stipulated data are required for the coolant gas and speed range. In addition it was also specified that the circulators must be capable of running with air or nitrogen at pressures of 1 to 2 kg/cm2 and between 15 and 350°C. Throughout the entire working range the blowers must be able to withstand relatively rapid changes in temperature, pressure and speed. It must be possible to stop them at high temperatures and restart them at any time. Furthermore, provision must be made for operating the six circulators belonging to the reactor in parallel.
