Of the nuclear power plants employing high-temperature gas-cooled reactors that are approaching completion, two are equipped with primary coolant circulators that were developed and manufactured by Brown Boveri. Although the requirements that these circulators have to fulfil are similar, two different technical approaches were made to the solution of the problems involved, The Dragon' reactor specified gas-lubricated bearings for the main coolant circuit. In contrast, the coolant circulator for the Brown Boveri-Krupp high-temperature reactor is an advanced design of blower with oil-lubricated bearings. Nevertheless, owing to the strictness of the requirements regardi.ng gas- tightness, the technical problems in this respect had to be solved by completely new methods. After a brief introduction to the problems posed by hightemperature gas-cooled reactors on the circulators, a description is given of these two developments. (auth)
