THE HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF $sup 121$Sb AND $sup 123$Sb

The hyperfine structure of the J =3,/2 ground state of Sb/sup 121/ and Sb/sup 123/ was studied by the atomic beam magnetic resonance method, and the results are consistent with the following values for the interaction constants: g/ sub j/ = -1.9701 plus or minus 0.0002, A/sup 121/ = -(299.034 plus or minus 0.004) Mc/s, A/sup 123/i =-(162. 451 plus or minus 0.003) Mc/s, B/sup 121/ = - (3.68 plus or minus 0.02) Mc/s, and B/sup 123/ =-(4 .67 plus or minus 0.03) Mc/ s. To the accuracy of the measurements there was no evidence for an octupole interaction. From the B values, Q/sup 121/ =-(0.20 plus or minus 0.03) x 10/ sup -24/ cm/sup 2/ and Q/sup 1/ s/sup 23/=--(0.26 plus or minus 0.04) x 10/sup - 24/ cm is obtained, and comparison of A/sup 123//A/sup / 1>s/sup 23/ with the ratio of g/sup 121//g/sup 123/ already published gives -0.3 18 plus or minus 0.003% for the hyperfine structure anomaly. Intermediate coupling theory accounts satisfactorily for g/sub j/, but an admixture of excited s states is necessary to explain the observed magnetic interaction and anomaly. (auth)
