The coulometric generation of 11 metal ions directly from the corresponding metal anodes was studied, together with the application of these ions to coulometric titrations and the application of these ions to coaiometric titrations and the suitability of this and other electrometric methods to the determination of fluoride ion. Of the metals selected for investigation, Bi, Zr, Hf, Ni, Pb, and In were studied extensively. The conditions for quantitative or reproducible generation were established for Bi(III), Zr(IV), Hf(IV), Ni(II), and In(III). These ions now constitute a new series of electrogenerated reagents. The usefulness of these electrogenerated reagents has been demonstrated by their successful application to coulometric titrations. A procedure for the standardization of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution with Bi(III) ion was developed. EDTA solutions having concentrations from 10/sup -5/ to 4 x 10/sup -4/ M were determined with errors of less than 0.5%. Electrogenerated Zr(IV) ion was studied for its applicability to a determination of fluoride ion. The end point of this coulometric titration was located amperometrically using Fe(III) as a polarographic indicator. The lowest amount of fluoride ion determined was about 5 x 10/sup -5/ moles (1 mg). The possibility of standardizing a cyanide solution with electrogenerated Ni(II) ion was also considered, and the results indicated some interesting aspects concerning Ni- cyanide complexes. The use of bismuth nitrate and bismuth oxyperchlorate as precipitants for fluoride ion was studied both by amperometry and conductometry. A preliminary investigation was made of the use of Be(II) as a reagent in the determination of fluoride ion conductometrically. (M.P.G.)
