IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO PROCESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LOW PERMEABILITY CARBON

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4112569
Commercial high-permeability graphite may be convented into the low- permeability form by passing a hydrocarbon gas through it at a high temperature (800 to 1200/sup o/C) to give a carbon-aceous deposit and heating it to a higher temperature ( approximately 3000/sup o/C) to drive off volatile matter and to graphitize the carbon deposit. In this way it is possible to reduce the permeability by a factor of 1000. The respective effects of the various hydrocarbon gases. e.g., methane, propane, and acetylene. are examined. Sometimes the process ia slowed by the formation of a thin surface film; in many cases, however, the low permeability offered by this surface film is satisfactory. (D.L.C.)
