POSSIBILITY OF QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF Sr$sup 90$ ON GLASS POWDER

The separation of Sr/sup 90/-Y/sup 90/ by the sorption method of glass has been investigated and the method is proposed for the determination of Sr/sup 90/. From the analyzed sample elements of the second group were isolated by the oxalate method and converted to chlorides. Dry precipitate was kept for 12 days to achieve Sr/sup 90/-Y/sup 90/ equilibrium, dissolved in alkali and passed through column field with a layer of glass powder (2 cm), which was previously washed with acid and alkaline solution of Sr(OH)/sub 2/. After washing the column with alkaline solution of pH 8-9, Sr passed into filtrate, and Y/sup 90/ was then eluted from the glass powder with 1% solution of HNO/sub 3/ containing stable Y. The identification of Y/sup 90/ and Sr/sup 90/ was conducted from half absorption of radiation and radioactive decay. Various types of glass were investigated as adsorbents: pyrex, Jena, window, and quartz glass. The most reliable results were obtained with quartz glass. (Referativnyy Zhurnal, Khimiya, No. 13, 1963)
