High field properties of ternary metal-molybdenum-sulfides

Conference · · IEEE Trans. Magn., v. MAG-11, no. 2, pp. 155-158

Measurements of the upper critical fields are presented for ternary metal-molybdenum-sulfides as a function of temperature, T, with dc magnetic fields up to approximately 215 kG and pulsed fields to approximately 500 kG. A nearly linear variation of H/sub C2/ versus T is observed up to the highest dc fields for all the compounds. The materials (nominal composition), T/sub c/ (measured), (dH/sub C2//dt)/sub T = T/sub c// (measured), and H/sub C2/(4.2 K) (calculated) for a dirty type II superconductor assuming no paramagnetic limiting are respectively: (a) Pb$sub 0$$.$$sub 9$Mo$sub 5$$.$$sub 1$$S$$sub 6$: 11.7 K, 60 kG/ K, 390 kG; (b) SnAl$sub 0$$.$$sub 5$ Mo$sub 4$$.$$sub 5$$S$$sub 6$: 14.2 K, 32 kG/K; 275 kG; (c) SnMo$sub 5$$S$$sub 6$: 13.4 K, 37 kG/K; 290 kG; (d) PbMo$sub 5$$.$$sub 1$$S$$sub 6$: 14.4, 60 kG/K, 515 kG. Pulsed field measurements yield H/sub C2/(4.2 K) = 390 kG for (a), 275 kG for (b), 290 kG for (c), and approximately equal to 510 kG for (d). The PbMo$sub 5$$.$$sub 1$$S$$sub 6$ has the highest value of H/sub C2/ measured to date. (5 fig) (auth)
