DESIGN OF OPENINGS FOR BURIED SHELTERS

A study is made of the design of low-cost protection of shelter openings against blast and radiation. The basic design considerations are outlined, and the structural and mechanical elements of the shelter entrance system are considered separately. Dimensions and geometry of entrance systems and ventilation systems are also considered. Radiation and blast effects and their influence on design are discussed. A general design procedure is outlined, and an example design solution is presented. (D.J.C.)
