On the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations, a quantitative review of the distribution and deposition of Rn229, Rn220, and their decay products in the atmosphere is given. With the help of an expanded exchange theory, in which the height dependence of the atmospheric turbulence and the deposition of the decay products are considered, the vertical distribution of the natural radioisotopes in the atmosphere was calculated. The results agreed well with previously obtained experimental results. The formation of natural radioactive aerosols in the atmosphere was investigated and the size distribution given. The processes for the deposition of Rn decay products are discussed and the resulting radioactivity in precipitation given.
