THE CONTAMINATION OF MILK BY RADIONUCLIDES IN FALLOUT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4110751
The major parameters that influence the uptake and assimilation of radionuclides in fallout by animals foraging on pastures are discussed. Equations for a radionuclide assimilation model for the cow and for the concentration of radionuclides in milk are presented, and values of the equation parameters for Sr/sup 89/, Sr/sup 90/, Te/sup 132/, and I/sup 131/ are derived from available reported data. The use of the model is illustrated by a computation of the concentrations of Sr/sup 89/, Sr/sup 90/, and I/sup 131/ in milk and the absorbed dose in humans from consumption of the milk following the contamination of pastures by fallout from an assumed 15-MT yield and surface detonation.
