THE G VALUE AND THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF THE FERROUS-FERRIC DOSIMETER

Experimental work was carried out to estimate the overall reproducibility of the ferrous sulfate method of radiation dosimetry. The work was divided equally between two separate laboratories using different spectrophotometers. It was shown that the ferric extinction coefficients for the two instruments differed by 2.3%. Correcting for the difference in extinction coefficients, it was shown that the overall reproducibility was plus or minus 2% in an experiment involving 128 dosimeters, eight different ferrous solutions, and four separate irradiations at temperatures in the range 16.8 to 31.0 deg C. Ferric radiation yield (G) values were determined using calorimetric techniques. Isothermal calorimeters were employed, the absorbers being of graphite or aluminum so as to avoid errors due to chemical energy losses. The resulting values of G ranged from 14.8 plus or minus 0.1 to 15.4 plus or minus 0.1. Possible sources of error in the graphite calorimeter are discussed. The G value results are shown to depend to some extent on the nature and internal dimensions of the ampoules used to contain the ferrous solutions. (auth)
