RARE-EARTH NITRATE AND OXIDE

Journal Article · · Arch. Environmental Health
Rare-earth nitrate and oxide salts were given to rats by intraperitoneal injection and by subcutaneous implantation. Groups of these animals were given 800 r of rays in addition to the chemicals. No mortalities occurred among the nonirradiated-treated rats. Radiation plus treatment caused mortality in rats which had received either compound intraperitoneally. Rare-earth nitrate was more effective than rare-earth oxide. Rare-earth nitrate was more effective in peanut oil than in water. Rare-earth nitrate was more damaging than rare- earth oxide when implanted by subcutaneous injection. The nitrate salt caused necrotic lesions, whereas only nodules resulted from treatment with the oxide. (auth)
