A durable thermal insulation material, suitable for reactor pressure vessels, comprises a plurality of thin metal sheets spaced apart by means of corrugations or spacers on each alternate sheet and held in place against the vessel wall by thick cover plates. Neutron heating of the pressure vessel can be reduced to approximately 60% by use of mild steel cover plates 1-in. thick, and this reduction can be increased still further by use of boron steel clad with mild steel.
